Sierra's Story

This five-year-old Quarter Horse is one of the first rescued horses to find haven at Willow Branch.

Sierra was found alone in a kill pen in Texas, the last one of a group of foals whose mothers had been shipped away to slaughter. She was so malnourished that her head and ears seemed malformed, her legs were gangly and crooked. She was, in short, an “ugly little thing.”

Paula Vincent took her in even before Willow Branch was a registered non-profit and gave her a name – Sierra. Paula and her crew re-fed Sierra under a veterinarian’s careful oversight. When she was well enough, Paula took Sierra to a local trainer where she could be brought along gently.

All this effort brought a resounding success for everyone. Sierra grew strong and beautiful, and she learned well. The trainer’s teen-aged daughter fell in love with Sierra and adopted her. The two of them have thrived on their mutual affection, and have shown the world that a skinny, abandoned, rescued filly could grow up to shine as a competitor and make a huge contribution in the life of her adopter. That’s exactly the kind of ending that everyone at Willow Branch lives for.
