Meet Kalabar, a 13-year-old newly gelded Mustang. Kalabar is a very lucky horse. He had spent his life so far as a stallion on a 40-acre property where he and two other horses were “allowed” to run “wild and free” — until the owners died and the property was sold for development. No provision had been made for these horses. None of the three had been handled — ever — not even haltered.
The middle-aged mare was taken in by someone who agreed to keep her as a pasture pet. The old, infirm, untrained stallion was mercifully euthanized, as he was unlikely to survive surgery, and if he’d gone to auction he’d have surely ended up at a slaughterhouse.
Kalabar, fortunately, made it through gelding and initial veterinary assessment just fine. He is now safe in the hands of Paula Vincent at Willow Branch. He’s recovering from his surgery and getting used to being closer to people. Very soon, he will travel to the trainer who has helped so many of Paula’s rescues. With positive reinforcement and gentle guidance, Kalabar will learn good manners and eventually proceed to becoming a ridable, biddable companion horse who can be adopted into a safe environment and live a good, healthy life.
